Chaa Da Cup - Please! is a food blog created for all food lovers
(n.b - mostly chai loving lovers).
The various mixtures of ingredients and recipes complement a hearty Chaa Da Cup! - you'll probably be looking (asking) for one ;)
This is my version of home cooked Punjabi-Kenyan heartiness.
No.16 – White Daal Bundi
5 different ingredients - 30min to prepare - serves 10 people
Ingredients:
1 litre - water.
1 bowl - sugar.
1 bowl - white dal (suki dal).
1 bowl - Medha.
1/4 teaspoon - food colouring.
Method:
Making the Chasni (sugar Syrup):
On low heat in a frying pan, add 1 bowl of water and 1 bowl of sugar. Allow the 2 ingredients to combine and come to a boil, forming a sugar syrup.
Making the Bundi:
In a pressure cooker, boil and cook 1 bowl of white (suki) dal in 500ml of water. Cook the dal for 15min until you hear 3 whistles then take it off the gas and sieve it out using a large sieve.
In a large bowl add 1 bowl of medha, the sieved white (suki) dal and a pinch or 2 of the food colouring, mix the ingredients together with some water until a semi-thick paste is formed. Using a ladle place a scoop full of the mixture onto a bundi channi (bundi strainer - large holed strainer), over a frier with hot vegetable oil in it, allowing little balls to form as they drop off the strainer into the oil.
Let the oil fry the little balls of bundi allowing them to cook. Once the bundi is golden-brown and crispy take it out off the oil and place it on a paper towel letting the oil soak off.
Finally serve your bundi, hot or cold, with a steaming hot Chaa Da Cup - Please!
